Winter Sports Wrap-Up Show Notes

  1. Jeff on WOYK
  2. Review of Kennard-Dale High School winter sports
    1. Boys Basketball
      1. Lost 72 – 63 in OT
      2. Carlisle at Carlisle
        1. AAAA playoff team
        2. not as strong as some of the other Mid-Penn conference teams but
          • went 14-11 on the season
          • went to the D3 AAAA playoffs(though that wasn’t that hard to do this year – more later)
          • wound up somewhere in the middle of the pack in the Mid Penn Commonwealth division
          • lost to Reading (30-0 at the time) in the playoffs – nothing to be ashamed of there
          • decent basketball team
      3. The first period was really when KD had trouble
        1. rushing shots
        2. a lot of offensive turnovers
        3. missed a few fast break opportunities
        4. if better first period – game would have turned out much differently
        5. 18-13 Carlisle
      4. The second period they shot much better
        1. Brenton Mitchell started to become a presence under the basket for KD that Carlisle was going to have trouble with for the rest of the night.
        2. 30-27 Carlisle
      5. KD actually had the lead for most of the third period
        1. Mitchell began to take charge everywhere not just inside
        2. 44-41 Carlisle

      1. By the 4th period KD was beginning to get impatient
        1. weren’t taking good shots again
        2. KD had trouble handling Jeremy Henning from Carlisle – he scored a lot of points and at key times this period for the Thundering Herd but fouled out by the end of the period
        3. Carlisle up by 3 with 9 seconds on the clock and KD’s Matt Romoser sends the game into overtime by scoring a 3 pointer at the buzzer
        4. 57-57
      2. Carlisle 72-63 in O.T. Top four KD point leaders by my count:
        1. Mitchell – 22
        2. Romoser 13
        3. Kevin Mead – 11
        4. Ethan Hornburger – 9
      3. Looking at KD’s record, I didn’t expect to see such a terrific game; but despite their 4-18 record they seemed like the real deal. Assuming they played this well most of the year, the only conclusion you can come to is that the YAIAA was one tough conference this year.
      4. Among KD’s wins this year was a 53-48 victory over 16-8 New Oxford. The Colonials did make it to the playoffs but lost to York Suburban(19-10).

    1. Girls Basketball
      1. Dover at KD
        1. Dover Girls finished 11-13 for the season
      2. KD had trouble with turnovers and gave up a few offensive rebounds
      3. Rhoda Marsteller looked terrific from the outside and definitely gets the game MVP with her terrific outside shooting.
      4. KD didn’t seem to be moving the ball around fast enough – especially coming up the court. They had some trouble dealing with the full court pressure Dover was putting on them.
      5. Dover finally went from a 1-1-3 to a 1-2-2 to shut down KD’s outside shooting which was really keeping them in the game. This didn’t have much effect on Marsteller who continued to have a great second half.
      6. For Dover #33 Spangler looked terrific. She was a good free throw shooter, fast, and and by far I thought she was the best ball handler Dover had.
      7. Dover always seemed to be under the basket, knew how to get the open shot, they were quick, and handled the ball well.
      8. KD didn’t do too bad a job handling the ball well either with three great ball-handlers in the lineup: Carlie Stratmeyer, Samantha Peirce, and Amanda Kelso.
      9. Dover won the game with a final score of 38-34 but Marsteller ended up with half of her teams point. For those of you who are mathematically challenged, that’s 17 points on the night.
    2. Hockey
      1. Rams lost this one 6-3
      2. Played Elizabethtown at the York City Ice Arena – makes KD the home team
        1. If you are familiar with the CPIHL these E-town and KD are both Tier 2 teams. E-Town plays in the Lebanon/Lancaster/Berks division and the Rams play in the York Division.
        2. E-town closed the season 15-2-1
        3. Lost to Annville-Cleona in the Viola Cup Quarter Finals.
      3. Should have been an evenly matched game but KD got off to a slow start.
        1. The first period and part of the second they just didn’t seem comfortable.
          • Reminded you a bit of the Flyers from a year ago where they were never able to get into position to make a play.
          • Passing wasn’t very crisp or deliberate either early in the game.
          • Also got caught behind the Bear’s net a few times and lost the puck
        2. By midway through the second period the Rams seem to come alive but not soon enough to avoid the 6-3 loss to the Bears.

        3. KD had 26 shots on goal to E-town’s 32 shots on goal.
      4. KD 2007/2008 hockey season
        1. KD’s hockey program continues to look impressive.
        2. In the first round of the playoffs they just buried Red Lion 7-0.
        3. Only to loose 5-4 to a very good Cedar Cliff team in the quarter finals in overtime
        4. Final record of 12-3 placing second in the York Division to West York who made it ????? Viola cup
        5. Congratulations to the terrific student athletes playing on the Ram’s hockey team, head coach Steve Buckley and the rest of the KD coaching staff on another successful season.
    1. Wrestling
      1. KD at Susquehannock
        1. KD beat the struggling Warriors 45-27
          • Susquehannock has not beaten any team on their schedule all year.
          • No individual Warriors show up in the District 3 rankings
        2. Our Rams displayed some great individual performances the night they wrestled Susquehannock
          • In the 171 pound weight class, Gary Lantz weighed in at 161.5 and pinned Dave Pugh in 1:20.
          • Tyler Robinson and Nick Page also pinned their opponents.
          • The best match all night and most gutsy performance was at the 125 pound weight class.
            • There was some confusion that night who was going to wrestle for KD at 125 and who was going to wrestle in the 130 pound weight class
            • According to the lineup I received from the score table, I have Victor Bracely winning in a 3-0 decision.
            • The NHSCA web site has Andrew Geppi wrestling that weight class and winning 2-0
              • they have the score wrong so I believe they also have the line-up incorrect here
          • It was hard to gauge just how good the Rams were playing a relatively weak opponent like Susquehannock.

            • KD themselves struggled a bit this year going 2-6 in the league
            • However the NHSCA site does have Gary Lantz ranked #2 in District 3
            • KD also placed 2nd after Tamaqua in the Powerade Option DKI Tournament.
    2. Now its time to announce the SYCP MVPs for KD in each of our major winter sports. Now this is just based on the games I’ve seen and we’ve talked about so far:

      3. Wrestling – Gary Lantz
      4. Hockey – (This was a tough one because there is so much talent on the hockey team this year) Kevin Shacklock
      5. Congratulations to our SYCP Most Valuable Players
    3. Now it’s time for my favorite award, the SYCP Slippery Snowball Award! The SSA goes to the best ball/puck handler of the winter sports season. Not only do they just need the passing and dribbling skills but they also have to be quick an play smart.
      1. Our nominees are
        1. For Girls BB – Amanda Kelso
        2. For Boys BB – Kevin Mead
        3. For Hockey – (going with our MVP) Kevin Shacklock
      2. Winner is: Amanda Kelso who really looked impressive, and kept the ball moving for the lady Rams during the Dover game.
