Ken is a Professor of Animal Science and has been at Penn State for more than 20 years. He currently has sole teaching responsibility for two courses – Swine Production and Management (An Sc 306, Fall Semester, odd years) and Applied Animal Welfare (An Sc 419, Fall Semester, even years). He has 50% responsibility for two courses – Nutrient Management in Agricultural Systems (An Sc 418. Fall Semester) and Be a Master Student (Ag 150S, Fall Semester). Ken serves as a co-advisor to the Penn State Block and Bridle Club, which has more than 100 active members. He also serves as extension swine specialist for Pennsylvania. He has interacted with the packing industry in Pennsylvania in the development of grade and weight programs. He has also worked closely with the major swine producing companies in the state in addition to providing educational programs to both county agents and family swine operations. Ken’s extension programs have focused on environmental issues in recent years. He has developed three statewide educational programs, including an environmental certification program for livestock producers, a site assessment program for large-scale animal operations and a certification program for commercial manure haulers and brokers. The latter two programs were recently integrated into state regulations. Ken also maintains an active outreach program for agriculture and science high school teachers in Pennsylvania, having conducted workshops for more than 300 teachers since 2001 to help improve agriculture literacy.
